Following last years August Bank Holiday weekend diving from Porthkerris I decided to plan a Springtime trip to the same area hoping to do some deeper wrecks. Seeing a recommendation on the rebreather forum I contacted DiveAction and booked their new catamarran for the later May Bank Holiday, diving from Porthoustock.
Accomodation was a struggle but Parc-An-Grouse managed to squeeze us in by moving some of their regulars to their cottage in Coverack.
Unfortunately the newly built cat wasn't ready in time so we dived from the old Gamgy Lady, a boat we first used in the mid 90's. It is fairly roomy, easy to kit up on and had a decent entry point added since we last dived from her. The ladder was ok, if a little short.
The Diving
The weather had looked marginal all week following the dreadful wet weather the week before. Luckily it had moderated slightly and the wind direction was in our favour. The area is quite tidal and Manacles can only really be dived around slack so on the Saturday morning we aimed for the shelter of the Volnay wreck.
Afternoon dive on the Spiridian Vagliano. I've dived the area many times but never this wreck. Quite well flattened but scenic and plenty of fish.
Sunday
Drift through the Manacles. Starting to the north and drifting between Inner and Outer Vase (?) myself and Nobby decided to put up the dSMB a little too early and became separated. I found a nice sheltered area and watched almost everyone swim past except Nobby. Everyone else seemed to enjoy it though.
Afternoon dive was the Mohegan whcih me and Nobby have dived many times before. The shot was close to the enormous boilers and condensors and we headed down the reef and wreck before turning and making a slow return to the shallower part of the reef.
Monday
Early start for The Wall then the Rock Island Bridge in the Helston River.
